As a volunteer nurse on the battlefields of the American Civil War, Clara Barton saw the poor condition of the military troops firsthand. She became known as the “Angel of the Battlefield.”

Today, the American Red Cross of the Greater Lehigh Valley serves as the emergency communications link between armed forces personnel and their loved ones back home. These communications are delivered around-the-clock, seven days a week, 365 days a year and may include notification of a critical illness or death in the family, or the birth of a child.

In addition, Red Cross provides counseling, referrals and emergency assistance grants to veterans, military personnel and civilians.
