Every day, around the clock, Red Cross volunteers serving on Disaster Action Teams are on call to respond to local emergencies. Whether a home fire, tornado or a regional flood, trained disaster volunteer teams are ready to assess damage and provide emergency assistance. During the initial days following a disaster, the Red Cross meets immediate individual or community needs for food, shelter, clothing and care, helping more than 1,000 residents in Southeast Tennessee every year. In addition, volunteers provide food and beverages to emergency responders during a disaster operation.
The Red Cross provides disaster assistance on a case-by-case basis according to need:
- Clothing, shoes and coats
- Toiletry items
- Medical supplies (diabetes equipment, contacts, glasses, dentures, etc.)
- Replacement medicines
- Mental health support
- Clean-up kits (bleach, mops, buckets, etc.)
- Bulk distribution items (rakes, tarps, trash bags, etc.)
All disaster assistance is provided free thanks to the generosity of the American people. You can help those impacted by crisis by making a financial contribution, providing in-kind supplies or giving of your time to serve on a disaster action team in your community.
