Relief Efforts Continue Throughout the State of Texas
Thousands of Red Cross workers are on the ground assisting in what will be a large and lengthy relief effort.
Ft. Worth, TX., Sept. 19, 2008 - As 1.5 million people in Texas remain without power, the first priority of the American Red Cross is to provide shelter, food and emotional support. More than 3,300 Red Cross workers representing each of the 50 states are on the ground providing help and hope to the thousands affected by Hurricane Ike.
Fast Facts Last night more than 11,000 people stayed in 95 shelters or evacuation centers. Since Sept. 14,
120,000 overnight stays in 261 centers have been provided.
Kitchens and mobile feeding units have served more than 413,000 meals and 458,000 snacks.
Emotional support is an important step on the road to recovery. The Red Cross has distributed nearly 25,000 Comfort Kits and made over 5,000 mental health contacts.
To donate to the Hurricane Ike Relief Fund, make checks payable to the American Red Cross and in the memo field write 'Hurricane Ike.' Or you may donate to the local relief funds by making the checks payable to American Red Cross and in the memo field write 'local relief.'
