Video: Why Give Blood?

The American Red Cross has issued an urgent need for eligible blood and platelet donors this summer. Wondering what motivates someone to roll up a sleeve? In this short video, Red Cross blood donors describe their personal reasons for giving blood, from the great feeling that comes from helping strangers, to a physician’s firsthand knowledge of the way this lifesaving gift benefits a patient in need.

MAKE AN APPOINTMENT TODAY Join new and regular blood and platelet donors who are making a big difference. Schedule an appointment to donate by using the Red Cross Blood Donor App, visiting redcrossblood.org, or calling 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767).

As a special thank you, those who come out to give blood or platelets with the Red Cross through August 31 are eligible for a $5 gift card.*

Blood can be safely donated every 56 days. Individuals who are 17 years of age in most states (16 with parental consent where allowed by state law), weigh at least 110 pounds and are in generally good health may be eligible to donate blood. High school students and other donors 18 years of age and younger also have to meet certain height and weight requirements. A blood donor card or driver’s license or two other forms of identification are required at check-in.

* Restrictions apply. Additional information and details are available at redcrossblood.org/summer.
