Free smoke alarm installation events planned across the United States to reduce home fire deaths and injuries
SAN DIEGO – April 10, 2018 – The American Red Cross is calling for volunteers to Sound the Alarm and be part of the nationwide Red Cross effort to help reduce the number of deaths and injuries from home fires.
Here in San Diego County, the local Red Cross invites the public to join in on two upcoming Sound the Alarm home fire safety and smoke alarm installation events:
- Saturday, April 28 – San Marcos
Rancho Vallecitos, Palomar Estates East and Palomar Estates West mobile home parks
- Saturday, May 5 – San Ysidro
Area between I-5 and Beyer Blvd, east of Smythe Avenue
“A new Red Cross study showed that people have a false sense of security about home fires – 40 percent of people believe they are more likely to win the lottery or get struck by lightning than experience a home fire,” said Sean Mahoney, Regional CEO, American Red Cross of San Diego/Imperial Counties. “The sad truth is that home fires kill seven people in this country every day and more than 75 percent of the incidents that we respond to in our region to are home fires. You can make a difference by volunteering to install smoke alarms with us and take steps to protect your own family from home fires.”
Sound the Alarm is part of the ongoing Red Cross Home Fire Campaign, in which Red Cross volunteers and partners canvass high-risk neighborhoods to install free smoke alarms, replace batteries in existing alarms and help families create home fire escape plans. As of April 2018, the Red Cross and our partners across the country have saved at least 381 lives through the Home Fire Campaign.
This work is made possible thanks to generous financial support from national partners Almost Family, Delta Air Lines, FEMA, and International Paper as well as local support from Wells Fargo, Barona Resort & Casino, Cox Communications, Motorola, and US Bank.
