After shelter closure, caseworkers will continue to assist those affected by the fires
SAN DIEGO – March 20, 2019 — In response to all needs of shelter residents met, the local Red Cross plans to close the shelter at the Otay Recreation Center this afternoon.
Any individuals affected by these apartment and mobile home park fires who have not yet been in contact with the Red Cross can call the 24/7 Disaster Dispatch hotline at (855) 891-7325.
Since requested by authorities, the local Red Cross provided for the immediate needs of displaced residents at the shelter, providing a safe place for people to stay, meals, snacks, beverages, comfort kits, health services, emotional support and more. Red Cross caseworkers have opened cases for 10 affected families.
We continue to work closely with our local partners and emergency management officials to coordinate recovery efforts moving forward. Trained Red Cross volunteers and staff are on call round-the-clock and ready to assist in various aspects including sheltering, feeding, disaster assessment, casework, and more. The American Red Cross of San Diego/Imperial Counties responds to about one disaster every 24 hours.
