The eight-day campaign generated funds for local Red Cross services
SAN DIEGO – May 8, 2019 — The American Red Cross of San Diego/Imperial Counties concluded its annual Shelter of Hope campaign on May 8 upon reaching the $500,000 fundraising goal. The campaign began on May 1 and visited eight different locations in San Diego County to raise funds and awareness for local Red Cross services.
As a part of the campaign, local Red Cross CEO Sean Mahoney and board members took turns sleeping on a Red Cross cot in the Shelter of Hope simulated disaster shelter. The experience replicates a small piece of what displaced families endure during disasters. Sean was able to return home following the campaign’s completion on May 8, which is also World Red Cross Day.
“Shelter of Hope highlights the importance of every service the local Red Cross provides,” said Mahoney. “I’m so grateful to volunteers and donors who made this year’s Shelter of Hope a success. Every hour given and every dollar raised allows the Red Cross to continue to provide help and hope to families in need. The Red Cross can be there thanks to funds raised year-round for our local services.”
Shelter of Hope donations support efforts to fulfill the Red Cross mission of preventing and alleviating human suffering in the face of disasters and emergencies. The American Red Cross of San Diego/Imperial Counties responds to about one disaster about every 24 hours and more than 20,000 units of blood are collected locally each year. Service to the Armed Forces helps thousands of military members, veterans and their families while the Women, Infants & Children program assists an average of 21,400 people each month.
Shelter of Hope would not have been possible without the generosity of anonymous donors who provided $250,000 in matching funds and our sponsors, including: San Diego Gas & Electric, Wells Fargo, Mor Furniture for Less, Crux Subsurface, Inc., the Doris & Jerry Hirschmann Family Foundation, U.S. Bank, Motorola Solutions Foundation, Barona Resort & Casino, Cox Communications and the San Diego Business Journal.
