Fletes saved a student’s life after student experienced two seizures
San Diego – August 30, 2019 — UC San Diego employee Hector Fletes called on his American Red Cross training to save a student’s life when the student experienced two seizures during an Ariel Silks class. For this heroic and lifesaving action, Fletes received the Red Cross Lifesaving Award for Professional Responders on August 29, 2019.
The Lifesaving Award for Professional Responders is the highest award given by the Red Cross to individuals who save or sustain a life using skills learned in a Red Cross Training Services course.
“Hector’s actions exemplify our mission to help people prepare for and respond to emergencies,” said Charlene Zettel, local American Red Cross Board Member and University of California Regent who presented Hector with the Lifesaving Award. “The Red Cross encourages everyone to have CPR and first aid training so they can respond when the need arises. Hector’s story is an example of how truly lifesaving this training can be.”
On February 15, 2019, a UCSD student experienced two seizures and collapsed during an Ariel Silks class Fletes was teaching. Fletes put him in a recovery position and checked for signs of life, but the student was unresponsive. He directed another student to call 911 and retrieve the AED. Using CPR skills learned from an American Red Cross class, Fletes started chest compressions. The student eventually revived and maintained consciousness as medical personnel arrived and took over the response.
