The Greater Chesapeake Region of the American Red Cross is pleased to recognize Sungwon Kim, of Baltimore, MD, as its July 2019 Volunteer of the Month.
Kim joined the American Red Cross as a volunteer in June 2018. She commits time each month to the Red Cross Service to the Armed Forces acting as a Veterans Affairs Voluntary Service (VAVS) representative working in the Baltimore Veterans Affairs (VA) Medical Center and the VA’s Loch Raven Community Living & Rehabilitation Center.
A research assistant by day, Kim sits on each of the VA facility’s VAVS committee, which is composed of different veteran service organizations. Those committees also serve as national representatives to the VA Healthcare Administration providing advice to the VA Secretary and Under Secretary on Health on how to coordinate and promote volunteer activities within VA health care facilities.
Red Cross SAF helps members of the military, veterans and their families prepare for, cope with, and respond to the challenges of military service. Kim has been instrumental in facilitating a relationship with VA staff to provide Red Cross resiliency workshops for the caregivers of the Baltimore VA Medical Center.
Because of the feedback from the caregivers and Kim’s efforts, the VA is looking to hold additional workshops to better support the caregivers who work tirelessly to support their veterans daily.
We offer special thanks to Sungwon for all her hard work and dedication!
