The American Red Cross Blue Ridge Piedmont Chapter serving Lincoln County is partnering with the Lincolnton Fire Department to conduct a home fire safety canvassing event Saturday in the Laboratory community. This is part of the Red Cross Home Fire Campaign and our centennial commitment to help make 100 high fire response communities in our region safer this year. Volunteers will visit homes offering to install free smoke alarms, replace expired batteries and check expiration dates in existing smoke alarms free of charge, and help residents create escape plans in the event of a home fire or other emergency.
“As we respond to help families every day after home fires in our region, this event is another example of our commitment to reduce home fire deaths and injuries, and prevent fires,” said Suzan Anderson, executive director, Blue Ridge Piedmont Chapter. “We encourage our Laboratory community neighbors who need working smoke alarms to be home during our door-to-door effort Saturday so they may take advantage of this lifesaving opportunity.”
The Red Cross Home Fire Campaign was launched in 2014 as a multi-year nationwide initiative to reduce deaths and injuries caused by home fires by 25 percent. As of April, 2017, the Red Cross and its partners have helped save at least 235 lives.
In Lincoln County in fiscal year 2016, we installed 110 alarms in 40 homes. So far, this fiscal year in Lincoln County, we have helped make more than 90 homes safer with the installation of more than 375 alarms.

While the Red Cross responds to nearly 64,000 disasters a year, one every 8 minutes, most of them are home fires. Home fires can happen quickly and claim lives and property. However, unlike other disasters, most home fires can be prevented. Families can keep themselves and their loved ones safe by checking their existing smoke alarms and practicing fire drills at home. The smoke alarm canvassing event is Saturday, May 13th. Teams of volunteers will be loading their gear and departing to the Laboratory community at about 9 a.m. from the Lincolnton Fire Department at 116 W. Sycamore St., Lincolnton, NC 28092.
