Through the remarkable experience of starting as a parttime stock clerk in 1978 to the current CEO and Chairman of the Board, Rodney McMullen, has led Kroger in directing more than $1.6 billion in charitable giving to support national and local organizations that feed families and build stronger communities. Of this, more than $1 billion in giving has been focused on ending hunger and bringing their Zero Hunger | Zero Waste social and environmental impact plan to life. Alongside the inspiring work of their two foundations—the company's focus on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, which recognizes the value of each person and the importance of creating environments that fuel collaboration, inspiration, and individual growth; has led to meaningful and immeasurable outcomes for our neighbors.
"What fitting tribute that the first-ever Clara Barton Award for Humanitarian Service was presented to Dr. O'dell Owens this past April. It was my honor to bestow Dr. Owens with this inaugural award for humanitarian service in recognition of his outstanding commitment to our community. With his passing words cannot express the deep loss felt by myself, the Greater Cincinnati Tri-State Chapter of the American Red Cross and our entire community. He was an influential leader who used his multifaceted experience and his voice to advocate for vulnerable and underserved people. Dr. Owens cared deeply about making us and the community better. Because he put his caring to action, he made a difference for us all. Thank your Dr. Owens for the stamp you placed on the heart of our community."
- Stephanie Byrd, Regional CEO Central & Southern Ohio
