Each year, disasters around the world kill nearly 100,000 and affect or displace 200 million people. Many of the places where these disasters occur are literally 'missing' from any map out there. As a result, first responders lack the information to make valuable decisions regarding relief efforts. On October 3, 2018, the American Red Cross Serving Central Texas is asking for your technical expertise to help us #MapIT and put the world’s most vulnerable places on the map!
Participants will work in teams of two using the ‘Missing Maps’ software to create maps in places where maps never existed before. Missing maps is an open, collaborative project in which you can help to map areas where the Red Cross and other humanitarian organizations are trying to meet the needs of vulnerable people around the world.
Grab a friend and make a team! For only $180 for a team of two, you can enter to compete against 100 other top tech influencers to see who can build the most maps in one hour. The winning team will receive 2 badges to next year’s SXSW. Other prizes available for runners up, team spirit and more!
