Chapman-Holcombe International Intern Program

Since its founding in 1984, the Chapman-Holcombe International Internship Program has connected the American Red Cross Bay Area Chapter to National Red Cross and Crescent Societies around the world. Every summer, the American Red Cross Bay Area Chapter hosts youth volunteers from various national societies as interns. The program is designed for the interns to learn about the American Red Cross specifically through participation in a host of activities, including meeting with department directors, disaster preparedness, first aid and CPR, and international humanitarian law trainings, and attending a variety of chapter events including the annual youth-focused Leadership Development Center.
Chapman-Holcombe International Intern Program
The Chapman-Holcombe International Student Intern program connects the American Red Cross Bay Area Chapter to National Societies around the world. Our chapter invites various National Societies to apply to send active youth volunteers ages 18-21 to the Bay Area to participate in a cultural exchange and to broaden their knowledge of the Red Cross/Red Crescent movement. Interns participate in chapter activities alongside adult and youth volunteers, teach community members about their National Societies, complete an independent project, and work with Bay Area staff to lead an annual youth Leadership Development Center.

History: The Chapman-Holcombe International Intern Program was founded in 1986 to honor the work and dedication of longtime American Red Cross Youth Services Directors, Mary Lou Chapman and Florence Holcombe. Both Ms. Chapman and Ms. Holcombe had a strong interest in developing international understanding among Red Cross youth through education and service, which inspired them to create an international youth exchange program between National Societies could assist in achieving this type of understanding. The Chapter thus created a program that would host interns each year in the Bay Area . Since its founding, nearly 40 countries have participated in the program.

The first interns came from Beijing, China and Bogota, Colombia. Others have followed from Armenia, Australia, Barbados, Bolivia, Bulgaria, Canada, Chile, China, Denmark, Egypt, England, Ethiopia, France, the Gambia, Ghana, Honduras, Iceland, Israel, Jamaica, Japan, Jordan, Kenya, Liberia, Malaysia, Myanmar, Nepal, Poland, Russia, Scotland, South Africa, the former Soviet Union, Sri Lanka, Suriname, Sweden, Thailand, Tonga, and the former Yugoslavia.

Application Process: National Societies are individually invited by the American Red Cross Bay Area to nominate two active youth volunteers to apply to participate in the program. The strongest candidates are invited to participate in a phone interview. If you have been invited to apply for the program you can download the application form and recommendation form.
