The Youth for Chinese Elderly program connects bilingual youth with members of the Chinese community to help them get prepared for disaster. With Youth for Chinese Elderly clubs in nine San Francisco high schools, the program allows youth volunteers to give back to the their community by becoming skilled instructors and providing disaster preparedness education at community health fairs and at senior homes in Chinatown.
As part of the Adopt-A-Senior-Building program, each Youth for Chinese Elderly high school club adopts a senior building in San Francisco. During monthly visits, the youth volunteers teach seniors about disaster preparedness, help them with developing disaster supply kits and practice key English vocabulary needed during a disaster. Over the course of the year, intergenerational ties are strengthened and more than 500 seniors receive comprehensive disaster preparedness training.
