Service to the Armed Forces

Watch this video of how a local Red Cross volunteer honors our community’s veterans.

The unwavering commitment the American Red Cross has to members of the U.S. military, its veterans and their families continues to grow and develop more than a century after Clara Barton first recruited nurses to support the U.S. Army. Today, the Red Cross is meeting the needs of a changing military and expanding services to veterans. Red Cross support of military members and their families enhances morale and contributes to increased operational capability in several ways.

The American Red Cross provides critical services with a caring touch to men and women in all branches of the United States military, active duty personnel, reservists and members of the National Guard, and their families. Through our Service to the Armed Forces (SAF) program, service men and women are eligible for three types of assistance beginning on the first day of enlistment: Emergency Services, Service to Military Families and Service to Military and Veterans Hospitals.

Emergency Services Include:
Emergency Communications — SAF sends messages about urgent news from home—a serious illness, the birth of a child or the death of a loved one—to service men and women anywhere in the world, including ships at sea, embassies and isolated military units.
Emergency Financial Assistance — In partnership with military aid societies, SAF facilitates the distribution of financial and/or travel assistance to qualifying retired or active military personnel and their families who are experiencing financial hardship or are in need of travel subsidies to fund visits with injured or sick loved ones or attend a memorial service.

If you are in need of either of these services, please call our 24/7 Military Casework Line at: 877-272-7337

Service to Military Families Include:
Reconnection Workshops — The American Red Cross offers multiple skill-building opportunities to help service members and veterans—as well as their families and support systems—identify and cope effectively with the unique challenges that arise after a deployment and can linger, long after leaving the military, if left unaddressed
Community Support ––The Region supports the Armed Forces in the following community activities:
  • Organizing deployment briefings and family days for service members and their loved ones
  • Participating reintegration events for troops returning from deployments
  • Providing service members and their families with referrals to other organizations for specialized assistance, such as legal advice or mental-health counseling

Service to Military and Veteran Hospitals:
Each year through the VA Voluntary Services Program (VAVS), nearly 1,000 American Red Cross volunteers proudly give more than 85,000 hours to help veterans in VA Medical Treatment Facilities across the country. In our region, we provide more than 30,000 comfort items including socks, underclothes, winter clothing, toiletry items and more to our most vulnerable veterans.
