Holiday for Heroes

  • Red Cross of Massachusetts - Holiday Mail for Heroes

In its ongoing efforts to support our military and veteran communities, the American Red Cross of Massachusetts is asking people interested in supporting these communities to consider two new options during this year’s holiday season.

1. Card bundle: Our service members – either deployed or in medical facilities – typically do not have ready access to a local greeting card shop, and will greatly appreciate being able to send a card home to their loved ones during the holidays.

  • 3 blank cards (holiday, birthday, thank you, valentines, et al per bundle and no glitter)
  • 3 blank envelopes with postage stamps
  • 1 short message written on an separate insert – do not included contact information, only first name)
  • 2. Warmer Winters donation: The American Red Cross of Massachusetts is encouraging donations of sweaters, scarves, or a pair of socks and gloves this winter as part of our ‘Warmer Winters’ initiative. Your donation of a NEW wrapped warm item will be distributed to our homeless veterans throughout the Commonwealth.

  • Warmer items include: Gloves, scarves, socks, hats and sweaters
  • Please be sure to note the size of the item which you have wrapped (we are requesting sizes large, XL, XXL, XXXL)
  • Size and gender should be written on the wrapping
  • The deadline for donations in support of our local program is Thursday, December 5, 2016.

The American Red Cross Holiday Mail for Heroes program was a national level program through 2013. Beginning in 2014, local Red Cross Chapter offices began shifting their holiday strategy in a manner that is more relevant and meaningful to their communities. American Red Cross National Headquarters made this change for several reasons including:

  • A reduction in U.S. military forces overseas, particularly in the Middle East and across Europe.
  • Increased costs of conducting the program.
  • These changes will allow local Red Cross offices to better concentrate on reaching out to the members of the military, veterans and families in their communities – neighbors helping neighbors.

NOTE: The former mail shipping address (5900 Georgia Ave in Washington DC) closed in 2011. Any items addressed to “Any Soldier” or “A Recovering American Soldier” – and sent to that address – will be returned as undeliverable because that address no longer exists.
