Chief Executive Officer
Matt Bertram joined the Central and Southeast Ohio Region of the American Red Cross as CEO in 2012. In 2014, Bertram became the CEO of the newly formed Ohio Buckeye Region, serving 45 counties, following the merger of the Central and Southeast Ohio Region with 19 counties in Northwest Ohio.
Matt’s journey with the Red Cross began in 1995 at the Mile High Chapter in Denver, Colorado. There he served in various roles in public relations and marketing, culminating with his appointment to Director of Marketing and Communications. During this time, Matt also served on the national Red Cross Rapid Response Team for Public Affairs and was deployed to the Cerro Grande fire in Los Alamos, New Mexico in 2000. In Denver, he handled public affairs following the Columbine High School shooting, several large wildfires and numerous blizzards.
Matt left the organization in 2003 to move to Evansville, Indiana where he married his wife, Tracy and began work as Executive Director for Habitat for Humanity of Evansville. Following the devastating November 2005 tornado that ripped through Evansville, Matt led efforts to develop and launch Operation Home Again, a program to build a fifty-four home subdivision, the first of its kind in Evansville, for affected families.
In 2006, Matt came back “home” to the Red Cross when he was named CEO with the Southwestern Indiana Chapter. In 2007, the chapter became HQ for the Evansville Region which included chapters and territories in Indiana, Illinois and Kentucky and, in 2011, the Evansville Region incorporated the Wabash Valley Region and grew to cover thirty-three counties. Matt’s chapter was subsequently recognized as a “Highly Performing Chapter,” been awarded the Gold and Platinum Award by the Evansville Courier and Press and the Leadership Evansville Award for Health and Social Service Business & Organization of the Year.
Matt also served as the Interim CEO for the North Jersey Region and led a task force to complete reorganization efforts and prepare for the incoming CEO.
Matt resides in Fairfield County with his wife and three children. He currently serves as the Vice-Chair of the State of Ohio Homeland Security Advisory Committee, is a member of Rotary, and also serves as a mentor in the National American Red Cross LEAD program.
