About Us

The Red Cross Rescue Racer Program is the official charity-training program for the Myrtle Beach Marathon. Through this program, participants with varying levels of fitness, can train successfully to run, run/walk or walk the half (13.1 miles) or full (26.2 miles) marathon. Team members vary from beginning to intermediate to advanced runners.

The program is a fundraising partnership of the Board of Directors of the Myrtle Beach Marathon and the Eastern South Carolina Chapter of the American Red Cross. The team also partners with the Grand Strand Running Club for coaching assistance and mentorship. The team program has raised more than $550,000 for Red Cross disaster services.

New participants pay a $35 non-refundable registration fee with a $20 membership to the Grand Strand Running Club.

Team members benefit from experienced trainers (Road Runner Club of America - RRCA certified coaches and mentors) who provide individual attention to development of training schedules and setting individual goals. An emphasis is placed on reaching those goals in a healthy way while avoiding injury.

Expert advice is offered through a series of educational programs provided by professionals in related fields such as nutrition, foot care, body mechanics, massage therapy, chiropractic, sports injury, and motivation.

Team members also benefit from the experience and guidance of seasoned marathoners who share how they achieve success. Weekly group training sessions provide a high level of motivation and encouragement.

Team membership guarantees: a paid slot in this popular race, a pre-race pasta party, access to an end-of-race team massage therapist, team logo apparel, a private duffle shuttle, and other benefits.


The program includes a 17- to 18-week training schedule beginning from the first week in November and running through race day the first weekend of March. Team activities continue year round to keep members engaged.

The team meets at the Red Cross Chapter, 3531 Pampas Drive, Myrtle Beach.


The team is led by Road Runners Club of America Certified Running Coaches assisted by returning team members.

Head Coach Christine Rockey has a Master’s in Wellness/Exercise Science and is pursuing a doctorate in Exercise and Performance Psychology. She has run 60 marathons in 24 states winning many including the Myrtle Beach Marathon.

Coach Susan Mungo has run numerous races since 2001. While serving on the local Red Cross board of directors in 2007, she co-founded the training program. Susan acts as the run/walk coach. She also founded the RiverTown Reindeer Race, a 5K team fundraiser held the first weekend of December each year in Conway, SC.

Other coaches include Dustin Warren, a military veteran and physical therapy assistant; Gary Elmore, who holds a BS in Exercise and Sport Science; Toni Birchler, military veteran and dental hygienist; Roscoe Griffin, who has completed dozens of races including the Boston and Chicago marathons multiple times; and Dawn Buckley, walking coach and Red Cross Board of Directors member.


There is a $35 non-refundable registration fee per participant and each individual must complete and sign a team member application. Each new team member is also required to join the Grand Strand Running Club for discounts on races, which is a$20 annual fee ($30 per family).

Each team member commits to raising or donating a minimum of $500 to help local Red Cross disaster relief programs. Team members are responsible for reaching their own financial goal; however there are optional group fundraising activities available. The $500 covers marathon registration fees, team logo apparel, a pre-race and post-race party, and access to a private duffle shuttle and team massage therapist at the finish. Race packets are available once the financial commitment is met.

RiverTown Reindeer Race

Palmetto SC Region - Red Cross Rescue Racers

The 8th Annual RiverTown Reindeer Race, presented by TD Ameritrade, along with ABC News 15, iHeart Radio and HTC Digital Cable, will be held along a tree-lined route in downtown Conway, SC., beginning at 8:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 3, 2016. The race starts and ends at Conway Riverfront Park area off 2nd Avenue. The race is a fundraising event of the American Red Cross and its Red Cross Rescue Racer program, now in it’s 10th year.

The 5K (3.1 mile) race is directed by Coastal Timing Race Management. Racers, which include runners and walkers of all ages, will receive awards presented to the top three overall male and female finishers, as well as the top three finishers in each age category.

Pre-registered participants will pay $25 and receive a specially designed Reindeer Race T-shirt. This year’s racers will also get keepsake American Red Cross/Reindeer Race bibs.

Race Day Registration is available 7-7:50 a.m. on race day with a $30 fee. Participants are encouraged to wear holiday attire. Dogs and strollers are welcome.
