On a clear Tuesday morning a quarter century ago, millions of Americans watchedin shock as the events of September 11, 2001, unfolded. As families searchedfor answers and communities struggled to comprehend thetragedy, American Red Cross volunteers across the country steppedforward to help. Among them were Northern New Englanders JulieLastoka, Sue Steinhurst, Donna Hastings,Starr Gilmartin, Lizzie Baker and Cheri Lundblad.The experiences of these six women during and after9/11 would not only shape their lives, but also inspire decadesof service.

So goes the lyrics to “Hey You” by Pink Floyd from their 1979 double album, The Wall. Those words also are sung by Echoes of Floyd, a New Hampshire based cover band that had one of its members, Geoffrey Williams, experiencing that feeling of hope after the home he shares with his partner, Melanie Barthel, and her son, Dante, went up in flames this May in the small town of Nelson, New Hampshire.

When a parent receives a critical diagnosis for their child, it is a life-changing event. That was certainly the case for Jessie Marunowski and her husband.
“When our daughter was unexpectedly diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia, we were told she had two weeks to live unless we started her treatment immediately,” she says. “When you get handed that kind of news, you’re a train wreck.”
