Each of the volunteers working with the Capital Region Chapter has a distinct personality, varied work experiences and a story to tell. To find out where you fit in please review our volunteer opportunities listed below. Once you have chosen an area of interest and attended our free volunteer orientation, a member of our Red Cross team will conduct an interview with you to discuss all your options and help you find a position and training schedule that works for you.

Disaster Responder

Disaster relief volunteers are on the front line providing food, shelter and comfort to those who have been affected by a home fire or other disaster. Whether you are a licensed mental health professional, nurse or you just want to lend a helping hand, join our team of volunteers that provide comfort in times of disasters day or night. Many of our disaster responder positions require night-time and weekend on-call availability. Opportunities for disaster responder positions are available locally and nationally.

Disaster Preparedness Instructor

Help your friends and neighbors get prepared by teaching people how to build a emergency preparedness kit and developing a safety evacuation plan. We are always looking for volunteers that have a passion for teaching others and a desire to help their community be prepared.

Health and Safety Instructor

Do you have certification for American Red Cross health and safety courses? If so, you can become a volunteer instructor to use your teaching and public speaking skills to promote essential safety initiatives to small groups at community classes and special events throughout the year.

Public Relations and Development

Do you have a background or strong interest in media relations or fundraising? If so, consider assisting our communications and development teams in promoting Red Cross services. Communications opportunities include serving as a public affairs spokeperson, photographer, and Web site manager. Development opportunities include grant writing, event coordination, project management and donor acknowledgment activities.

Medical Volunteer

Volunteers with medical training help staff first aid stations throughout the area during special events, such as concerts, festivals, sporting events, etc. This position requires current Red Cross Emergency Response certification or an EMT, RN, LVN or MD license. The Red Cross will provide additional training for certification in CPR for the Professional Rescuer or AED essentials. Time commitment varies depending on frequency and duration of events.

Administrative Support

If you like working with people, then volunteer to help with our administrative needs. Some of the opportunities in this area include customer service, call center support, technology support, data entry, serving as receptionists/greeters at our facilities and filing.
