The Cape, Islands and Southeast Massachusetts Chapter serves a population of more than 1, 273,000 people in the 15 towns of Barnstable County and the islands of Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket and Bristol, Plymouth, and Dukes Counties. We are part of the Massachusetts Region of the Red Cross.

The 15th Annual American Red Cross Heroes Breakfast takes place on Friday, April 7th and is the largest annual fundraising event for the Cape, Islands and Southeast Massachusetts chapter. More than 500 heroes, individuals, community leaders, business owners, family and friends will be in attendance.
At the breakfast, we are proud to showcase how local heroes change lives. Selfless heroics- whether through saving a life or enriching and transforming lives over years of service to our community- make a difference in the Cape, Islands and Southeast Massachusetts communities. Every person we highlight is a true hero.

Barry Rector, R.Ph., ND, is a Pharmacist at Island Pharmacy in Nantucket, Massachusetts. Barry has over 35 years of experience as a Pharmacist in a variety of retail and institutional establishments. He has served 6 years as an Assistant Director of Pharmacy at an 800 bed tertiary care teaching hospital. Barry has over 7 years of experience as a Director of Pharmacy at a community hospital. In many of these settings, he has created new physical plant environments, has beta-tested and implemented new computer systems and software and trained personnel in the same. Barry has extensive expertise and experience as a Holistic Health Practitioner with degrees in Homeopathy, Healing Touch, Herbalism and Naturopathy.
Barry also has significant political and leadership experience on boards such as the Nantucket Planning & Economic Development Commission (Past Chair), Massachusetts Community Preservation Coalition (Vice Chair), and the Nantucket Planning Board (Chair). He also aids his community as the Public Information Officer for the Nantucket HAM Radio Emergency Services and as the Disaster Action Captain for the Red Cross. Barry serves on several philanthropic organizations such as the Masons, International Order of Odd Fellows (Past Grand Master; Grand Representative), Nantucket Center for Elder Affairs (President - Board of Trustees) and the Cape, Islands and Southeast MA Chapter American Red Cross (Chair – Board of Directors) .
Hospice Liaison, Beacon Hospice
Lisa has lived on Cape Cod for over a quarter-century. Her professional work experience has been in advertising sales, working for radio stations in Boston and Cape Cod and has spent 18 years at Cape Cod Media Group and now works for Beacon Hospice as the Hospice Liaison. She served 9 years on the Duffy Health Center Board, chairing their advancement committee and co-chairing their Annual Night of Stars Gala. Lisa is also a past Red Cross Hero from 2011 and has participated in Red Cross Disaster 5k. She resides in Centerville with her two dogs Georgia and Scout and her boyfriend Stephen Mazzoni.
Retired research scientist
Catharie Conway Nass was Managing Director of Donor Management & Research for the Greater Chesapeake & Potomac Red Cross Blood Services before retiring to Wellfleet and joining the Cape Cod & Islands Chapter as a Disaster Services Volunteer. She has a doctorate in Epidemiology from the Johns Hopkins University School of Public Health and was previously a Board Member and Chairman of the Board of the American Cancer Society of Baltimore, Maryland and a member of the Health Education Advisory Committee of the Baltimore City Public Schools.
Catharie has been Chair of Disaster Services Volunteers for the Chapter and currently represents the Chapter on the Cape Cod Citizens Corps Council. She assists the South Section Manager with administrative tasks and is the designated Red Cross Manager for the Nauset High School shelter operated by the Regional Emergency Planning Committee of Barnstable County.
Denise Thorne Johnson has been coming to Cape Cod for over thirty years. She and her husband Bruce became year round residents of Hyannis Port four years ago. Ms. Johnson manages a consulting practice specializing in Branding and Digital Marketing.
Ms. Johnson has had a distinguished career in marketing over the last twenty-five years working for blue-chip companies in financial services, consumer goods and communications. In 2010 she was named by American Banker as one of the top ten financial marketing executives in the U.S. She currently has a consulting practice specializing in branding and digital marketing.
Ms. Johnson was most recently SVP for Marketing Strategy and Digital at SunTrust Bank in Atlanta, GA. She has also held executive marketing positions with PNC Financial Services, Bank of Boston, Chase and Citicorp. She was also an EVP Account Director for Arnold Advertising in Boston. Ms. Johnson majored in English at Hood College in Frederick, MD.
Ms. Johnson has also been actively involved in the communities in which she has lived. Johnson was a Trustee and member of the executive committee of Robert Morris University, served on the board of Girls Hope of Pittsburgh, and the marketing committees of both the Carnegie Museum of art and the Carnegie Science Center.
Commander of the 102nd Intelligence Group of the Massachusetts Air National Guard
Colonel Ginger Doonan is the Commander of the 102nd Intelligence Group of the Massachusetts Air National Guard at Otis Air National Guard Base. She is a graduate of the Academy of Military Science, served in several operations overseas, is a past president of the National Guard Association of Massachusetts and is a Board member of the Cape Cod Community College Center for Graduate Education. Colonel Doonan lives with her two children.
Executive Director of Plymouth Crossings
Bob is a graduate of Columbia University, NYC, with a double master's degree in Public Health and Social Work. He is married with two children, Arielle aged 25, and Zachary aged 23. He has lived in Plymouth for the past 23 years, and currently is the Executive Director of Plymouth Crossings, A Benchmark Senior Living Community.

Assistant Vice President/Commercial Loan Officer at Cape Cod Five Cents Savings Bank
Andrew Was born and raised on Cape Cod and graduated from D-Y High. He received a Bachelor of Science Degree from the US Military Academy at West Point and served 5 years in the Army with overseas deployments to Kosovo and Iraq. After completing his military service, Andrew relocated to New York City and worked for an investment bank. IN 2011 Andrew returned to Cape Cod and joined the Cape Cod Five Cents Savings Bank. He lives in Dennis with his wife, Susan, and daughter Emma. In his spare time he enjoys playing sports and participating in the Cape Cod Young Professionals Organization.

Kenneth J. McGuire is the President and Founder of McGuire Financial Services, an independent financial advisory firm focused on serving the retired and soon-to-be retired residents of Cape Cod and Southeastern MA for over 26 years. He holds a bachelor’s degree in science from Bridgewater State University and an associate’s degree in science from Cape Cod Community College. He is a Registered Financial Consultant with the International Association of Registered Financial Consultants. Ken has always been an active member of his community, serving in a multitude of roles and organizations, such as past elected member of the D-Y School Committee, coach to youth soccer teams in Yarmouth and currently with the Red Cross board and Hope Dementia & Alzheimer’s committee. Ken resides in West Yarmouth with his wife, Beth.
Brigadier General (Retired)
Anthony Schiavi is the Chief Administrative Officer reporting to the Board of Selectman in the Town of Ashland for the proper operation of town affairs under the authority of the Town's Charter, which includes the supervision and direction of all town employees and departments. Ensures the full and complete accuracy of town records for the financial and administrative activities of the town. Administers all general and special laws applicable to the town, all by-laws and all regulations established by the Board of Selectman. Serves as the Appointing Authority for all town employees, including serving as the Police Commissioner for the town having general oversight of the Ashland Police Department.
Brigadier General Schiavi retired from the United States Air Force and Massachusetts Air National Guard in September 2013 after 30 years of service as an F-15 pilot, Commander of the 102d Fighter Wing, 102d Intelligence Wing and the first Executive Director of the former Massachusetts Military Reservation, which was renamed Joint Base Cape Cod by Governor Deval Patrick.
Senior Move and Well-being Consultant
Linda Sheldon, of Sagamore Beach, is a graduate of Barnard College and earned Masters' Degrees from the New School of Social Research (Psychology) and the University of Southern California (Public Administration). Most recently she has developed a service for Seniors: Shifting Sands Transitions. Many of her classes are designed for Seniors including a program called Meaningful Journeys for residents in Assisted Living Centers who have been diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease and Dementia.
Captain with jetBlue Airways
Scott Bienz is originally from Kalamazoo, Michigan and relocated to Southeast Massachusetts in 2012. He is an Eagle Scout, a member of St. Gabriel's Parish in Marion, and currently volunteers with Project Grow at Sippican Elementary and the Air Line Pilots Association of Herndon, Virginia. Scott has been a donor of whole blood and platelet products since 1994. He looks forward to supporting the important mission of the Red Cross of the Cape, Islands and Southeast Massachusetts through the new board position. Scott resides in Marion with his wife, Heather, and their sons Evann and Luke.
Financial Services Professional
Holly Bowlin, of West Wareham, is a Financial Services Professional with New York Life and an attorney licensed in Massachusetts & Maryland. She is a New Bedford native who works with clients throughout the south coast and Cape Cod. Holly is a military spouse who works hard to give back to local service members by providing them with financial services both while they are actively serving in the military and transitioning out. She dedicates time by participating in WalkMS on a yearly basis to help find a cure for multiple sclerosis.
Holly has traveled the country living in Maryland, Florida, Oregon, and Virginia over the last eight years and moved back to Massachusetts in 2015 to put down roots. In her spare time, she enjoys spending time with her husband Dustin, daughter Malin, and their dog Juneau.
Chief Development Officer
Kevin Ralph is the Chief Development Officer for the Cape Cod Healthcare Foundation where he oversees all fundraising efforts on behalf of Cape Cod Hospital, Falmouth Hospital, the Visiting Nurse Association of Cape Cod and all other components of the healthcare system. Prior to his arrival at CCHC in 2014 he was Chief Development Officer at the American Red Cross - North Jersey Region where he led his team to a record-setting $32 million revenue target in 2014. Before his time with the Red Cross he was Chief Development Officer at Matheny Medical & Educational Center in Peapack, NJ, one of the nation's premier teaching hospitals and schools serving individuals with medically-complex developmental disabilities.
Earlier in his career, Kevin was Assistant Vice President for Development at Widener University in Chester, Pennsylvania, where he led fundraising efforts for the seven schools and colleges that comprise the university's main campus. Prior to his time there, he was responsible for fundraising for several institutes and centers at Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in New Brunswick, NJ. Kevin began his career at his alma mater, Drew University in Madison, NJ, where he served as Assistant Men's Basketball Coach while working full-time in the development and alumni relations office. He was inducted into Drew's Athletic Hall of Fame in September 2011. In addition to being a long-time member of AFP and CASE, Kevin also completed the Management Development Program at Harvard University in the summer of 2008.
Laurel Ryan of Abington, Massachusetts is a 2015 Graduate of Bridgewater State University with a degree in Business Administration. During college, Laurel worked for T3 Expo LLC in Lakeville and is now an Account Executive for the company. As such, she coordinates the set up of international trade show events for her Fortune 500 clients. Following the preparation of events at corporate headquarters, she travels around the world overseeing the setup and execution of same. When she is home, she teaches Zumba at a local fitness facility. Laurel has been an active volunteer with the Jeffrey Coombs Foundation for the past 8 years. In her spare time she enjoys volunteering for military troop charitable organizations, biking and other outdoor activities. Laurel served as the Student Representative to the Red Cross Board of Directors Blood Service Division for two years during college. She is excited to be joining the Red Cross of The Cape, Islands and Southeast Massachusetts Board.
Paul Robillard and his wife Janice Mercadante were summer residents in Mashpee for many years and now call Mashpee their home. They are the parents of six children and six grandchildren. Paul began his career with the Red Cross as the Executive Director of the Greater Fall River Chapter and after the merger of four chapters he became the Manager of the Southeastern MA chapter. He retired from the Red Cross after 15 years of service and has remained a volunteer instructor in Disaster Services. He holds an Associates degree from Johnson and Wales University, a Bachelor's degree in Political Science and a Master's degree in Business Administration both from UMass Dartmouth. He currently works as an adjunct instructor in Business at Bristol Community College and coordinates their new Casino program. He also teaches economics at Johnson and Wales University.
Chief Executive Officer, Cape Cod Child Development
Anne Colwell has over thirty years of business experience in healthcare, financial services, consumer products, engineering and early childhood education. She is currently the Chief Executive Officer for Cape Cod Child Development which is a $12 million dollar non-profit agency providing services for over 3,000 children per year. Prior to her current role, she was Vice President of Human Resources and Safety/Security for Southcoast Health Systems ($1 Billion healthcare organization with 7,000 employees) based in New Bedford, MA. Prior positions include Director of Human Resources, Cape Cod Healthcare, Senior Vice President, Human Resources at CCBT Financial Companies, Vice President, Human Resources at The First Years, Vice President of Human Resources at Scudder Kemper Financial.
She currently serves on the Board of Directors of Massachusetts Association for Early Education and Care (MADCA), Board of Directors for Cape Cod Children’s Museum, Massachusetts Head Start Collaboration Office Advisory Council, Cape Cod Regional Network on Homelessness Policy Board and Community Health Network Association (CHNHA) Board.
Anne lives in East Sandwich with her two teenage daughters, Helen and Sarah.
