Clara Barton, founder of the American Red Cross, always looked ahead. "I have faith in the possibility of something better," she was fond of saying. And she wasn’t alone. In the 135 years since she founded the organization, thousands of people—both volunteers who offered their time and talent, and donors who offered their hard-earned treasures—have shared her faith and made the Red Cross the foremost humanitarian service agency in the world. Together, they have turned the "possibility of something better" into a reality.

Nowhere is this more true than the Greater Cincinnati-Dayton Region. Each year, our 4,000 volunteers provide help to our region’s 3.7 million people. They:

  • Respond to more than 900 disasters, helping more than 1,200 families.
  • Provide assistance to 6,400 military families.
  • Train more than 63,000 people in Red Cross first aid, CPR and AED course.
  • Provide community disaster education and preparedness programs for more than 125,000 people.
  • And, starting in 2014, they installed more than 200 smoke detectors in targeted neighborhoods through a Home Fire Preparedness Campaign, one of which directly led to the saving of someone’s life.
But they can’t do it alone. The “possibility of something better” is a two-part vision, with the efforts of our volunteers being supported by the generosity of our donors. Although the American Red Cross has a mandate from Congress to be the official and primary recovery and resource organization during a disaster, we do not receive any government funding. We rely entirely on the generosity of individuals and businesses. The Red Cross offers many ways to support our efforts and our mission, and we encourage you to find a way that best fits your giving needs. Every dollar makes a difference.
