In the Northern Nevada, Red Cross volunteers are on call 24 hours a day to assist local people and families who have lost their home to a house fire, apartment fire, flood, or other disaster. Children and families left homeless from disasters seek the Red Cross in their time of need.
They come to us, often with only the clothes on their backs seeking a caring person. In return, our Disaster Action Teams (DAT), made up entirely of volunteers, provide comfort kits for personal hygiene, emergency shelter, food, clothing, and appropriate financial assistance. We also link those affected to housing assistance, social services, and mental health services to help assist with the devastating loss of their homes, belongings, pets, loved ones, and often their "old lives." The core of Red Cross disaster relief is the assistance given to individuals and families affected by disaster to enable them to resume their normal independent lives.
We also support emergency workers on occasion, during search and rescue operations, structure fires, large-scale transportation accidents and other emergencies. Additional disaster services may be available depending on verified, disaster-caused needs.
Are you a disaster victim in need of assistance? If you have been affected by a disaster and have questions about the assistance the American Red Cross offers, please call 775-856-1000.
All disaster assistance is free, made possible by voluntary donations of time and money from people in our community.
