Visit SoundTheAlarm.org to Help Save Lives and Make Homes Safer Across the Tennessee Region through May 12
Over the next three weeks, more than 100,000 smoke alarms will be installed in 100 cities across the country, all part of the American Red Cross Sound the Alarm, Save a Life campaign.
On Saturday, April 27, the American Red Cross of Tennessee volunteers hit the streets going door-to-door installing alarms across the region. In the first day of the campaign that lasts through May 12, more than 2,530 alarms were installed. That is 105 alarms installed by volunteers each hour for the first day of the event.
Installation events started nationwide this past weekend. Hundreds of Tennessee volunteers will install the free alarms and educate families on safe fire escape plans in their homes until May 12. All installation events will take place in predetermined neighborhoods and last from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
"We are very happy to see so many homes protected with these smoke alarm installs,” said Joel Sullivan, chief executive officer for Red Cross of Tennessee. “Our goal is to place more than 3,500 free smoke alarms throughout the state and I think we are well on our way to achieve that goal this year. We are once again very proud of our volunteers who are taking the time to educate homeowners by making a home fire escape plan for each family.” Statistics show families have less than two minutes to safely escape a fire in their homes. “Minutes can mean the difference between life and death.”
The American Red Cross assists in approximately 60,000 disasters each year. While many are natural disasters, most are single-family home fires.
The Red Cross home fire safety campaign started in 2014. Since its launch, the effort has saved the lives of 582 people across the nation.
