Resources For Schools
Educating for Emergencies
The lessons you provide the young people in your care will benefit them throughout their lives. Now the Red Cross makes it easy for you to add lessons that could also save their lives.
The American Red Cross is committed to helping youth and young adults become better prepared for a disaster or emergency. We work closely with schools, scout groups, and youth-serving organizations to raise awareness of disaster risk and build resiliency among young people. Our age-appropriate preparedness materials and trainings educate youth with engaging activities and easy action steps.
The Pillowcase Project
The Pillowcase Project
Contact your local Red Cross chapter to get our free preparedness education presentation for 3rd – 5th graders.
The Pillowcase Project, sponsored by Disney, is a preparedness education program for children in grades 3 – 5, which teaches students about personal and family preparedness, local hazards, and basic coping skills. The hour long presentation is perfect for schools, after-school programs, Girl and Boy Scout troop meetings, and more. Red Cross volunteers lead students through a “learn, practice, share” framework to engage them in disaster preparedness. Upon completion, students receive a sturdy pillowcase in which to build their personal emergency supplies kit. Presentations are customized to focus on a hazard that is important and relevant to the local community.
Masters of Disaster
The Masters of Disaster® Family Kit and Educator's Kit are available for order through your local Red Cross.
The American Red Cross Masters of Disaster® curriculum features ready-to-go lesson plans that help educate children about important disaster safety and preparedness information. The Masters of Disaster curriculum materials are specifically tailored for lower elementary (K–2), upper elementary (3–5) and middle school (6–8) classes.
Masters of Disaster contains lessons, activities, and demonstrations on disaster-related topics. The curriculum is non-sequential, allowing organizers to choose the lesson plans that best fit into their topics of interest.
Lessons are enjoyable and interactive, ensuring that everyone is having fun while internalizing important life skills though building capabilities in Mathematics, Language Arts, Social Studies, and Science.
Masters of Disaster can be used to help reduce children's anxiety about unknown aspects of disasters and tragic events. They will also gain confidence to deal successfully with life's unexpected turns.
