2013 "Everyday Heroes" Winners Announced
...it makes my heart feel good to hear that people still care about each other and are willing to help one another...
Every year, American Red Cross chapters around the country have recognized valiant efforts in their communities. This year in Southern Nevada, we're celebrating 7 years of honoring local heroes for the things they've done to show support or heroism.
The 7th annual Everyday Heroes Awards, presented by the Southern Nevada Chapter of the American Red Cross and Caesar’s Entertainment, with generous support from 8 News NOW and their Community Pride Partners: NV Energy and Findlay Automotive Group, is scheduled for Thursday, October 17, 2013, at the Paris Las Vegas Hotel from 7:30 am – 9:00am.
This year's categories and winners are:
Adult Good Samaritan: Presented to an ordinary citizen above the age of 18, for an extraordinary act of heroism or courage - Elicea Monte.
Youth Good Samaritan: Presented to an ordinary citizen under the age of 18, for an extraordinary act of heroism or courage - Diego and Draven Avila.
Military: Presented to a member of the armed forces (active or retired, commissioned or non-commissioned) whose lifesaving action went above and beyond the call of duty – this award may be awarded posthumously - Tammy Killen.
Fire Fighter: Presented to a professional or volunteer firefighter or emergency dispatch operator whose lifesaving action went above and beyond the call of duty - Response Teams for Carpenter 1 Fire.
Law Enforcement: Presented to a law enforcement agent whose lifesaving actions went above and beyond the call of duty - Robert Borchardt.
International Service: Presented to an individual, group or company in recognition of their commitment to humanitarian efforts in other parts of the world - Metropolitan Community Church Las Vegas.
Animal Rescue: Presented to an animal that saved the life of a human, an ordinary citizen who used life saving skills to save the life of an animal(s), or to a professional involved in the care of animals - Stephanie Watson Combs.
Aquatics: Presented to a lifeguard or ordinary citizen whose lifesaving action was able to prevent a serious water-related injury or drowning - Two winners: Dilon Baker and Jose "Manny" Mayorga.
Medical Professional: Presented to a doctor, nurse or EMT whose lifesaving actions went above and beyond the call of duty - Alexandra Walsh.
Community Impact: Presented to a community group, neighborhood organization or local company that consistently demonstrates a commitment to making Southern Nevada a safer and more compassionate community - Laurie Willmott.
Community Service: Presented to an individual in recognition of volunteering their time to help others in the Southern Nevada community - Cameron Cheal.

Proceeds from the Everyday Heroes Awards will fund vital community services: local disaster relief, support to military personnel and their families, and lifesaving health and safety education. All Red Cross disaster relief and assistance to military families is free, provided by voluntary contributions of time and money from the American people.
