A perfect fall morning today greeted the participants, estimated at 3,500, for the 9th Annual Turkey Trot at Columbia Park. Our main sponsor of this family-oriented event was Western States Cat and Cat Rental. The event has grown practically every year since its inception in 2004 when 600 people showed up for the inaugural event, and for several years running has been the Mid-Columbia’s largest running event. New this year, the race chips measuring runners exact time for the 5K, sponsored by Washington River Protection Solutions, helped make the race run smoothly and safely.
Very early estimates are that the fun-run/walk raised $70,000 after expenses, our best total ever, all in support of local Red Cross services, including local Disaster Services, Health & Safety Services, and Service to Armed Forces.
Turkey Trot had features for everyone—coffee and hot chocolate donated by Dutch Brothers, , water from Elevate, apples from Douglas Fruits, complimentary Golazo energy drinks, warm ups by Kia Ora Fitness Center, KORD Radio, Turkey Claus, goodies for kiddies donated by McDonalds and Dairy Queen, and more. The winners in each age group male and female each won a pumpkin pie donated by Costco. Overall male winner was 22 year old Andrew Gonzales for the fifth year straight, and 16 year old Megan Beauchene of Kennewick was the overall female winner.
The Chapter thanks all of the participants, sponsors, media partners, local school districts and dozens of local volunteers who showed up to help, without whom the event would not have been possible.
