An open letter to all those looking to join the AmeriCorps National Preparedness Response Corps (NPRC) class of 2014.
To the Future NPRC Members,
You are taking the first step in the right direction to a successful career. If you accept this life-changing opportunity, here’s what you can expect.
We write to you from different backgrounds and areas of expertise, but no matter where you come from you will be both challenged and rewarded by what lies ahead. Our team is composed of a retired professional, a mother and recent college graduates. At the Southeastern Pennsylvania Chapter of the American Red Cross, we come together as equals. The second week on the job, Hurricane Isaac led us to Mississippi where we oversaw shelters on the seventh anniversary of Hurricane Katrina. Only one month later, we were responding to Superstorm Sandy in Tri-State Area. While these events were at the forefront of our service year, they do not take away the importance of the daily operations for which we are accountable.
We have had the privilege of rotating within the four departments comprising Emergency Services, all of which are vital to the three main tenets of our team’s undertaking: preparedness, response, and recovery. In joining our efforts, you will become a part of the local community in various ways, all of which will shape your eleven months as an AmeriCorps member at the American Red Cross. You will take part in saving lives through sharing vital disaster preparedness and safety information, providing comfort and assistance to those who experience a disaster, and helping our clients along their journey to recovery at the Red Cross House. No other position can offer such rewarding experiences and skills to carry with you in your future endeavors. Why? Because AmeriCorps works.
