Mr. Whelan has been served as treasurer on the board of directors for several years, as well as the chair of the Hometown Heroes committee. Hometown Heroes is the signature fundraising event for the local Red Cross and brings together philanthropists and business leaders to honor the everyday heroes that make our community stronger.

“Dan exudes quite leadership and a motivational style that acknowledges the contributions of every volunteer. He handles every assignment with professionalism, follow-through and positive energy. As such, we can think of no one more deserving of the William J. Casey Award than Dan Whelan,” Board Chair Steve Schuh said at the ceremony.

The William J. Casey award is given annually to a Red Cross volunteer who has made a significant contribution to the general welfare, culture and business life of the community. The award was given to Mr. Whelan at the Red Cross’s annual meeting on June 28.

The American Red Cross of Central Maryland shelters, feeds and counsels victims of disasters; provides lifesaving blood to area hospitals; teaches lifesaving skills; and supports military members and their families. The Red Cross is a charitable organization — not a government agency — and depends on volunteers and the generosity of the American public to perform its humanitarian mission.
