Celebrities Undertake 4,000 Kilometer Bicycle Tour in Support of Red Cross

One month after launching a 2,485 mile tour from Calgary, Alberta to Santa Monica, California in the first annual Ride for Red, celebrity cyclists are hoping to raise awareness of and support for both the American Red Cross and Canadian Red Cross.

Team members -- Miss Canada 2009, Shannon Lynn; U.S. Olympic bobsledders, Bill Schuffenhauer and Brock Kreitzburg; and Canadian Olympic bobsledder, Christina Smith -- were motivated to embark on this strenuous journey by the compassion that the Red Cross shows to victims of domestic and international disasters. The Ride for Red aims to raise $1 million for both American Red Cross and Canadian Red Cross disaster relief efforts.

“It's a way to impact people around the world by not only raising money, but also informing and educating people about the needs and humanitarian work of the Red Cross,” said Ride for Red participant Brock Kreitzburg.

On September 26, the Ride for Red team began their journey in Calgary, Alberta with a fundraising event and a kick off ceremony. The cyclists were commended for their devotion to the cause and were deemed honorary ‘Calgarians.’ Along the way, the team will be joined by twenty celebrities and local day riders on this six week long tour of western North America. Over the course of the ride, the cyclists will trek an average 100 kilometers, or just over 62 miles, per day.

With the theme “No Boundaries,” the Ride for Red team is going beyond their comfort zone to lend a hand and also inspire others to follow them. At the eight scheduled stops, including Seattle, Portland, Crescent City and San Francisco within the United States, the team will speak with the public in order to motivate others to assist Red Cross efforts.

“It’s been great to see the support come from both the United States and Canada,” said Brock Kreitzburg at the kickoff in Calgary. “I know that the support will only continue to grow as people realize the need to help others in their community and around the world.”

On November 4, the team will cycle over the finish line in Santa Monica where they will be greeted by a welcoming crowd of supporters and the local Santa Monica Chapter of the American Red Cross. The campaign will conclude on November 6 with a Red Cross Gala, where the team will be celebrated for their inspiring humanitarian venture.
