The Cortland County Chapter of the American Red Cross is moving today from its office at 11 Port Watson St., Cortland, to an office at 50 Clinton Ave. in downtown Cortland. The office will officially open on Wednesday, March 20.
The Red Cross will occupy the first-floor office that was most recently used by the Seven Valleys Health Coalition. The United Way also has a first-floor office in the building, while the Keegan Associates’ marketing and public relations firm occupies the second floor.
The Cortland County Chapter had operated out of the former Brewer Titchener Corp. on Port Watson Street since 1985.
Formerly owned by the Knights of Columbus, the historic building at 50 Clinton Ave. was completely renovated in 1998, owner Hugh Keegan said. The Cortland County Chapter’s new office will provide a clean, friendly environment for visitors, ample parking, and a training room where residents can take CPR, first aid and other life-saving health and safety classes.
“What makes a house a home are the people who reside therein,” said Barry Stein, Community Chapter Executive of the Cortland County Chapter. “At the Red Cross, we are fortunate to have a loyal cadre of compassionate and caring volunteers, employees and consumers who will fill our new office with hope and goodwill.”
The new office is conveniently located on Clinton Avenue, which is also State Route 13. The office is off Exit 11 on Route 81 and it’s also near Main Street in Cortland.
“We’re grateful that the Red Cross has decided to come in,” Keegan said. “The best thing about the location is that it’s so easy to get here – about 60 seconds off 81 if you catch the light – and it’s so close to downtown.”
The Red Cross will hold an open house and ribbon-cutting ceremony at the new office later this spring. Starting Wednesday, the new office will be open from 8:30 to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, and the telephone number will remain the same: (607) 753-1182.
