On July 1, 2011, at Bayview Beach, lifeguards Taylor Inkley of South Yarmouth, Conor Robertson of West Yarmouth, Zach Sarapas of Franklin and Katie McLoughlin of Weston rushed to the aid of a woman in distress. They removed her from the water and began performing CPR, keeping her alive until she could be transferred to the care of Dennis Fire Department paramedics.
Dennis Fire Chief Mark Dellner said, “On behalf of the Dennis Fire Department, I would like to commend the lifeguards’ life-saving actions and efforts in performing CPR on an 83-year old woman who needed their assistance to survive. Without their proper actions prior to our paramedics’ arrival, this incident could have turned out much differently for the patient and her family.”
Dennis Fire Captain Robert "Buster" Brown, the duty officer in command of the fire units at the incident, commended the actions of the four lifeguards.
The public is invited to join the American Red Cross, Cape and Islands Chapter and the Cape & Islands United Way on March 30th to honor these Dennis lifeguards, along with many other heroes from Cape Cod, Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket at the 10th Annual Heroes Breakfast. Tickets for the Breakfast are available via redcross.org/ma/hyannis, uwcapecod.org or by calling (508) 775-1540 ext. 21.
