Cape Cod 10/22/12 Disaster 5K brings out superheroes to Hyannis

Saturday’s 5K to benefit the Cape Cod and Islands Chapter of the American Red Cross was a smashing success.

From our heroic volunteers who put on this event to the heroic participants with a few official superheroes from Elvis to Michaelangelo the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle, almost 100 participants hit the streets of Hyannis.

The winners for the day were:

MASTER OF DISASTER: Jason McWhirter a Mass. Maritime grad who beat out many of his younger schoolmates, finished in 19:33.

MISTRESS OF DISASTER: Holly Tavano, daughter of board member Col. Tony Schiavi, finished in 24:23

Winners received a heroes medal and a pair of free sneakers from Hanlon Shoes on Main Street.

Costume Contest winners: Included INDIVIDUAL: Laurie Grandmont- dressed as Michaelangelo, a Teenage Mutant Ninja turtle. She won a $50 gift certificate from Hanlon Shoes on Main Street Hyannis; TEAM: Superheroes Team, headed up by former Red Cross board member Beth Young. They will share a $100 gift certificate from Hanlon Shoes...

  • Once again our amazing volunteers showed our community how hard they work, raising thousands of dollars to help Cape Cod and Islands disaster relief work in just the second year of the race.
