Feb. 15 Field News: For Grand Canyon Chapter Volunteers

HURRICANE SANDY UPDATE: In the three-plus months since Hurricane Sandy made landfall, the American Red Cross has served 12.5 million meals and snacks; distributed 6.9 million relief items; and offered 111,000 health services and emotional support contacts. More than 17,000 Red Cross workers – 33 from the Grand Canyon Chapter – have supported the relief efforts, including nearly 700 on the ground right now.

IN REMEMBRANCE: The Grand Canyon Chapter is saddened to learn of the passing of Tempe resident Joe Mann, a longtime volunteer with the chapter who died Feb. 2 at the age of 75. Mann had volunteered with the Red Cross since 2001, and in November, he deployed to New Jersey to provide relief for Sandy, working in mental health services. Funeral services are 11 a.m. Feb. 16 at Desert Palm United Church of Christ in Tempe.

WELCOME THEM ABOARD: The Grand Canyon Chapter has hired Scott Keyes as Resilience Specialist and Cynthia Snyder as Yuma County Disaster Services Specialist, with both starting Feb. 19. Keyes is transferring to the Grand Canyon Chapter from the Mountain Valley Chapter in Provo, Utah, where he served as Emergency Services Readiness and Resilience Lead Specialist. Holding a bachelor’s degree in sociology, Keyes has experience with client casework and community disaster education, and most recently, he was responsible for the day-to-day operations of the Emergency Utility Assistance program within the Utah Region. His main responsibilities with the Grand Canyon Chapter will be to deliver the programs and services of the Prepare Arizona program, which include Team Firestoppers, wildfire outreach and disaster preparedness education. Holding a bachelor’s in psychology, Snyder was employed by both for-profit and nonprofit agencies dealing with case management and community resource referrals.

SUNS FUNDRAISER: The Grand Canyon Chapter is holding a 50-50 raffle for the Phoenix Suns-Minnesota Timberwolves game at 7 p.m. Feb. 26 at US Airways Center, at 201 E. Jefferson St. in Phoenix. The Suns have discounted tickets, with a portion of the proceeds benefiting the Red Cross. Upper-level sideline seats (rows 1-5) are $25, and they include a gift from the Suns. Lower-level baseline seats (rows 10-28) are $50, and they include a Suns replica jersey.

SAKS PROMOTION: Through the end of the month, Saks Fifth Avenue credit card customers may choose the Red Cross to receive 5 percent of their total purchases made at or at Saks at Biltmore Fashion Park, at 2446 E. Camelback Road in Phoenix. Saks has committed to a maximum total donation of $100,000. In addition, Off 5th store customers may make financial donations at checkout to benefit the Red Cross.

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY: Are you handy with tools and a paintbrush? The Grand Canyon Chapter is seeking facilities maintenance volunteers to support chapter building and grounds projects at its Phoenix headquarters and at its offices in Flagstaff, Prescott, Lake Havasu City and Yuma. You must be able to lift at least 50 pounds and bend for projects like moving boxes, painting, furniture arrangement, logistics support and office relocations.
