The 2012 American Red Cross, Firelands Chapter, Volunteer Recognition was held on Tuesday evening, Sept. 18, aboard the Goodtime I. About 50 Red Cross volunteers enjoyed the cruise and refreshments.
During the cruise, Janice Alexander, Firelands Chapter Chair of Volunteers, and Ron Rude, Firelands Chapter Executive Director, presented awards in three categories. The Good Neighbor Award is given each year to an individual or organization whose cooperation and support help to advance American Red Cross services to our community. Mercy-Willard Hospital received this award for support of the blood program as well as both financial and in-kind support to the chapter’s Firelands Heroes Awards.
The Special Citation for Exceptional Volunteer Service is given each year to a volunteer who has gone substantially beyond their original volunteer commitment. Collins resident, and Red Cross board member, Leslie Mesenburg received this award in Huron County for developing and maintaining the chapter’s Face Book page.
The Erie County recipient of the Special Citation went to John Mueller. John is a leadership volunteer for Disaster Services. He is also a volunteer with Blood Services and is the chapter’s representative on the Ohio Veterans Home Advisory Committee. John also provides many health and safety presentations for children each year.
Kathy Olak, Volunteer Representative for Northern Ohio Blood Services Region, presented Ancilla Beamer an award for Exceptional Volunteer Service for the many hours she spends helping out at area blood drives.
The Clara Barton Award for Volunteer Leadership recognizes a volunteer who has provided distinguished leadership for Firelands Chapter. This year’s Huron County award was given to board member Tom Sharpnack. In the past year, Tom has used his leadership skills to carry out the first, annual Firelands Chapter golf outing at Eagle Creek as well as to secure a signature sponsorship gift for the chapter’s Chez Francois dinner.
The Clara Barton Award for Erie County was presented to board member Rita Khosla who has served on the chapter’s Philanthropy Committee and has chaired the Audit Committee for the past several years. She has also used her influence to secure a sponsorship from the MetLife Foundation to support the chapter’s Firelands Heroes event for the past several years.
