The American Red Cross and Marathon want to fill the gas tanks of two lucky blood donors this summer!
Those who come to give blood this July can enter to win free gas from Marathon. Two individuals will each receive a $500 gas card.
Central Ohioans can fuel the hope for patients by rolling up their sleeve to give blood. Every day, hospital patients are in need of life-saving blood for various medical treatments — and not just emergencies. An open-heart surgery patient, a leukemia patient undergoing chemotherapy, and those with sickle cell disease may need blood transfusions in order to live.
“Some patients can’t live without blood transfusions — just like our cars can’t run without gas,” said Rodney Wilson, communications manager of the American Red Cross Central Ohio Blood Services Region.
The Red Cross hopes the chance to win free gas will boost donations and help avoid a summer blood shortage. Typically, the summer season is known for low blood supplies because regular donors become busy with summer activities and may forget the need for blood. At the same time, the need for blood often rises as increased roadway and travel-related accidents drain supplies. A serious injury due to a vehicle accident may require up to 40 pints of blood for emergency care.
“Make donating blood a priority this summer. If you wait to donate until someone you know needs blood, it may be too late,” said Wilson. “And you could be filling your gas tank for free.”
Donating blood only takes about an hour and can help save up to three lives. To learn more or to schedule a donation appointment, visit redcrossblood.org or call 1-800-RED CROSS.
Everyone who comes to donate at participating drives will be issued an entry ticket for the gas card drawings. The drawings will be held after July 31, and the two winners will be notified.
