We are delighted to announce that the John T. Vucurevich Foundation has approved a $140,000 grant for the Black Hills Area Chapter of the American Red Cross. This extremely generous donation will allow us to purchase several items vital to our mission and will also provide financial support for local disaster relief efforts. More specifically, the grant includes:
· A truck with the capacity to tow disaster trailers and haul disaster supplies
· Cash assistance and basic necessities for disaster victims
· Disaster training and expense reimbursement for volunteers
· Communications equipment
This summer we opened shelters in Custer, Hot Springs, Rosebud, Pine Ridge and Rapid City due to wildfires. This increase in service utilization in combination with our support of local firefighters has depleted many of our resources. The funds received from this grant will allow us to replenish our disaster supplies, purchase up-to date communications equipment and train staff and volunteers to serve during disasters.
Above all, we can’t overstate our relief in receiving funding for a mission appropriate vehicle. Currently, we are towing our disaster trailers with a two-wheel drive van on its second engine. With the approach of winter we were very concerned about our capacity to reach people in need during emergencies.
Thank you to the John T. Vucurevich Foundation for the significant impact this gift will have on western South Dakota!
