NASHVILLE, Tenn., November 27, 2013 — HCA has partnered with the American Red Cross in this time of thanks and giving, to present a donation for International relief efforts following the devastating typhoon in the Philippines.
“With the generous humanitarian support of our partner organizations like HCA, the global Red Cross network is responding to the emergency needs in the Philippines with food, water, and relief supplies, and the American Red Cross is lending people, expertise and equipment to this effort.” said Joel Sullivan, Regional CEO for the Tennessee Volunteer Region of the American Red Cross.
The American Red Cross has initially committed $11 million in funding that is being used to procure and distribute relief items, (such as food, blankets, hygiene kits, mosquito nets) and cash grants for use when markets begin functioning normally; and provide emergency shelter healthcare and access to clean water and sanitation. Red Cross expects to make additional financial commitments to the typhoon response in the Philippines as donations come in.
The deadly Typhoon swept through the Philippines on November 8th causing widespread destruction. Estimates of the storm’s impact continue to rise. The Philippines government currently estimates that up to 13.2 million people – more than 12 per cent of the country’s population – are affected, of whom over 4.4 million people are displaced from their homes. People who want to donate to the American Red Cross to support the response for this typhoon can go to redcross.org or call 1-800-REDCROSS or mail in a donation to their local Red Cross chapter.
