The American Red Cross Illinois Capital Area Chapter is holding a Volunteer Orientation on Thursday, February 14, from 5:30 p.m. – 6:30 p.m. at the Red Cross Office, 1045 Outer Park, Springfield.
Anyone interested in volunteering with the Red Cross or being deployed for local/national disaster response operations must attend this class, which is open to those who live in Christian, Logan, Macoupin, Menard, Montgomery, Sangamon, and Shelby County. The Chapter works with new volunteers to find roles that best suit each person’s skills and interests. These include responding to disasters; assisting local military members, their families, and veterans; staffing first aid stations; teaching lifesaving skills and disaster training courses; delivering meals to community members through our Meals on Wheels program; educating the community on disaster and emergency preparation; general office duties; public affairs; and assisting with special events and fundraisers.
Following the orientation, a “Disaster Services: An Overview” class will take place. This free course explains how the American Red Cross responds to disasters and the role of its volunteers during such times. Anyone is welcome regardless of age or experience.
