This Labor Day is not only the unofficial end of summer and another reason to fire up the grill or literally jump in the lake. This Labor Day kicks off football around Arkansas with at least two big games-The University of Lafayette at The University of Arkansas and the University of Arkansas Pine Bluff at Arkansas State University. With record heat forecast for the weekend, the American Red Cross offers safety tips to help everyone have a safe and enjoyable holiday.
“While many people will spend the Labor Day weekend traveling and spending time with family and friends, no one should take a vacation from safety,” said Brigette Williams, Communications Information Officer, American Red Cross in Arkansas. “With thousands of Arkansans on the road traveling to games in Fayetteville and Jonesboro, it’s most important that football fans and vacationers work to remain vigilant on the road, at the lake and at cookouts.”
With temperatures predicted to be near 100 degrees at kick-off in Fayetteville, and still in the 90’s when the Golden Lions and Red Wolves meet at 6pm, safety prep for the heat is critical. “Hydration should start immediately, with regular consumption of water throughout the day, not just when you arrive at the game,” stated Williams. Another important tip is to watch consumption of alcoholic beverages before and during games, as well as on waterways when swimming or boating. “Alcohol is not a thirst quencher nor does it hydrate you,” stated Williams. “With the addition of high heat and humidity, the potential for injury or worse increases for individuals, as well as others they may interact with.”
The American Red Cross First Aid App for smart phones and tablets provides users with expert advice on what to do in case of an emergency. “Whether you’re checking symptoms of heat related illnesses or have a life threatening situation requiring 911, the First Aid App has tips, plus a 911 dialer built in.” This free app is available on the Apple iTunes or Google Play stores and at redcross.org/mobileapps.
