On November 8, local individuals and businesses were honored at the American Red Cross Los Angeles Region 3rd Annual Heroes Breakfast, a fundraising and recognition event for taking an active role in preparing our community for disaster. The Red Cross presented the awards Thursday, Nov. 8, 2012, at the California Club in downtown Los Angeles.
Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa received the 2012 National Heroes Award. Mayor Villaraigosa has been a friend to the American Red Cross and worked with us through many trying times in Los Angeles including the wildfires and the horrendous Metrolink disaster. The Mayor has been involved with the PrepareLA campaign, sharing the importance of preparedness for all Los Angeles residents.
“I’m proud to partner with the Red Cross on their PrepareLA campaign. Emergency preparedness is not just a priority, it’s an imperative. The Red Cross is working to ensure our City and our region are ready to respond and recover if a natural disaster strikes,” said Mayor Villaraigosa.
Additional 2012 honorees included, NBC4 Weatherman Fritz Coleman, who received the Community Service award, Herbalife, Toyota and MissMe who each received Corporate Hero Awards and the Deppe Family who received the Local Hero award on behalf of August “Gus” Deppe.
David Ono, co-anchor for ABC7 Eyewitness News at 4pm and 6pm was the keynote speaker. David spoke about his experiences covering the devastation following the January 2010 earthquake in Haiti, the Japan earthquake and tsunami, Hurricane Katrina and the importance of personal preparedness. Actress Elisabeth Rohm served as emcee for the event. Rohm has been a member of the American Red Cross National Celebrity Cabinet since 2006, and in that time, she has worked tirelessly to support the American Red Cross.

Attendance at the breakfast demonstrated commitment to and support of the ongoing efforts by the Red Cross and other preparedness organizations for PrepareLA, a Red Cross Los Angeles Region initiative to help build a stronger, better prepared and more disaster resilient community. PrepareLA ensures that the Red Cross will have the resources to prepare for and more fully respond to disasters locally.
