Annual ‘Battle for Blood’ Kicks Off June 24

Lansing-area police and fire departments are once again joining forces for the 2013 ‘Battle for Blood’ challenge. This year’s event will kick-off Monday, June 24 and runs through July 6 at various blood drives and at the American Red Cross Lansing Donor Center (1729 E. Saginaw).

“We’re excited to once again partner with these everyday heroes who put their lives on the line each and every day,” said Todd Kulman, Communications Program Manager with the Great Lakes Blood Services Region. “This is a great way to raise awareness of the need for blood, which typically increases during the summer months.”

The American Red Cross ‘Battle for Blood’ challenge was launched more than a decade ago as a friendly competition between area police and fire departments. Beginning June 26, everyone who turns out to donate blood at participating drives and at the Lansing Donor Center can vote to support their local police or fire department. At the end of the two-week challenge, the department with the most votes wins bragging rights until next year. Participating this year: Lansing Police/Fire; East Lansing Police/Fire; Michigan State University Public Safety; Michigan State Police Academy; Delta Township Police/Fire; Charlotte Police/Fire; Grand Ledge Police/Fire; Eaton County Sheriff’s Department; and, Meridian Township Police/Fire.

Everyone who comes out to donate will be entered for a chance to win a ‘Summer Fun in Michigan’ ticket package, which includes 2 tickets to Michigan’s Adventure, 2 tickets to the Common Ground Music Festival and 2 tickets to the August 18 NASCAR race at Michigan International Speedway. Also, everyone who turns out to donate between June 24 and June 30 will receive a free Red Cross t-shirt. Everyone who turns out to donate between July 1 and July 6 will receive a free Red Cross baseball hat.

The goal for this year’s ‘Battle for Blood’ challenge is 250 units, making the real winners the hundreds of hospital patients who need blood and blood products to stay alive. Special thanks to WILX-TV 10 and Midwest Communications radio group for their generous support of this event.
