March is Red Cross Month: Volunteer, Donate, Take a Class

SAN DIEGO, Feb. 28, 2013 — Every March, the American Red Cross celebrates Red Cross Month and the San Diego/Imperial Counties Chapter is urging all to get involved.

March was first proclaimed as Red Cross Month 70 years ago by President Franklin D. Roosevelt. Since 1943, every president, including President Obama, has made the designation since. The American Red Cross is synonymous with helping people, and has been doing so for more than 130 years.

“Red Cross Month is a great time for people to become part of the Red Cross and there are many different ways to do it,” said Tony Young, CEO of the American Red Cross San Diego/Imperial Counties Chapter. “They can develop a preparedness plan for their household, become a Red Cross volunteer, give blood, or take a Red Cross class. We’re also grateful to our corporate sponsors who are supporting us throughout the month.”

The San Diego/Imperial Counties Chapter has a number of ways the local community can celebrate Red Cross Month from March 1-31, including:

Donate:

  • Wendy’s: Wendy’s Restaurants in San Diego are joining Red Cross this month by providing a coupon for a free Frosty for San Diegans who donate online during March. Additionally, all 29 locations throughout the County will have donation canisters in their restaurants.
  • H&R Block: H&R Block will donate $1 to the Red Cross in March for every free Second Look review processed in all H&R Block offices in San Diego County. Donation jars are also in all area offices throughout the month.
  • ecoATM: Those throughout San Diego County who are looking to recycle their old mobile phones, tablets, ereaders, or MP3 players can donate part or all of their proceeds to the Red Cross at any of ecoATM’s donation kiosks. For more information visit www.ecoATM.com.

  • The Red Cross responds to nearly 70,000 disasters a year nationwide, providing shelter, food, emotional support and other necessities to those affected. It provides 24-hour support to members of the military, veterans and their families – in war zones, military hospitals and on military installations around the world; collects and distributes about 40 percent of the nation’s blood supply and trains more than seven million people in first aid, water safety and other life-saving skills every year.

Here in the San Diego/Imperial Counties region between July-December 2012 alone, the chapter responded to 159 local emergencies. The chapter also trained 9,093 people in lifesaving skills.

During Red Cross Month, the American Red Cross also recognizes our local everyday heroes who give of themselves and in some way help the community.

“Please celebrate those who help all of us here in San Diego and Imperial Counties by giving their time to help their neighbor,” said Young. “We want to thank our heroes during Red Cross Month – our volunteers, blood donors, class takers and financial supporters who help us assist those in need.”

The Red Cross is not a government agency and relies on donations of time, money and blood to do its work. An average of 91 cents of every dollar the American Red Cross spends is invested in humanitarian services and programs.
