The holidays are in full swing at the American Red Cross in Oklahoma City. Community volunteers are spending hours creating and stuffing stockings for children across the Oklahoma City Metro.
“Our Holiday Stocking Program is an opportunity for the Red Cross to bring a smile to thousands of underprivileged children,” said volunteer services director Jeff Robbins.
For the last 23 years, the Red Cross makes and stuffs 5,000 stockings to be distributed to different agencies in the metro area. This is done through churches, day cares, Head Start programs, United Way partners and schools in low-income areas.
“We try to fill each stocking with toys, candy, school supplies and hygiene items,” Robbins said.
The Stocking Program is completely volunteer driven. Each stocking is hand-made by a group known as the Red Cross sewing ladies along with some stuffed animals. They are then filled by Red Cross volunteers as well as community groups like University of Central Oklahoma nursing students and Girl Scout Troops. Some of these groups fill thousands of stockings in just a few hours.
Thank you to all the volunteers for their work in helping provide a happy holiday for those in need.
