Orange, NH and Richford, VT Responses Makes 7 in 5 Days

The American Red Cross is known for its disaster relief & emergency management efforts.
Busy winter fire season continues into spring.

(Orange, NH and Richford, VT – April 4, 2013) Last night, two Disaster Action Teams from the Vermont & the New Hampshire Upper Valley American Red Cross extended a helping hand to two families forced from their homes. After receiving a call of a fully-involved house fire, in Orange, NH, Red Cross volunteers headed to the scene to meet with the family of four, two adults and two kids, who were displaced. Assistance was provided to help replace food and clothing lost in the fire. The impacted family was going to stay with nearby relatives.

In Richford, VT, a family of two made out somewhat better. What had come in to the Red Cross as a report of fire, in the end turned out to be a serious problem with the home’s furnace. As a result of smoke and a lack of a furnace, the Red Cross volunteers made arrangements for two nights in a local motel to ensure that the family had a safe and warm place to stay. No other emergency assistance was needed.

Winter is the busiest time of year for Red Cross volunteers, who respond to a significant number of house and apartment fires. In a familiar pattern, many times the calls for help come in groups, with the Red Cross often being asked to respond to multiple events over a short period of time. This pattern has continued into spring this year, like the current set of seven responses to house and apartment fires in just the past five days.

The ability of the Red Cross to extend a helping hand at this quick pace is dependent upon maintaining a vibrant corps of volunteers. The organization is always recruiting new members to their disaster action teams, providing all of the training necessary at no cost to those who are interested. No prior experience is necessary. Anyone interested in learning more about the Red Cross volunteer experience is urged to go to or to call locally at 802-660-9130, ext. 107.
