Red Cross Assistance after Tragic Mount Vernon Fire

Eight Red Cross workers responded to the scene of a three-alarm fire at 40 East Birch Street in Mount Vernon, N.Y. on Sept. 13 that tragically took the life of one man. Six apartments in the six-story building were damaged in the fire which left 11 people homeless.

Working with city of Mt Vernon the Red Cross opened a reception center at a local church that opened their doors to help. Red Cross mental health professionals provided support to the families at the local hospitals. On scene Red Cross volunteers completed disaster assessments and provided four adults and one teenager with emergency lodging.
