Red Cross Helping 11 People After Sunday Fires in Newport, Providence

March 17 fires displace 11; the Red Cross is helping meet emergency needs.

The Red Cross responded to fires on Sunday, March 17, in Newport and Providence, displacing 11 people. The Red Cross is helping with emergency needs. The Red Cross is helping five people – three adults and two children – in two families after a fire on Mendon Road in Newport. One adult received help with emergency housing and food needs. Two adults and two children received help with housing, food and clothing needs. Additionally, the children were provided stuffed toys. After a fire on Cumerford Street in Providence, the Red Cross is providing a family of four adults and two children help with emergency housing and food needs, as well as stuffed toys for the children. The Red Cross is also providing comfort kits, containing age and gender appropriate personal care items such as toothbrushes, deodorant, shaving supplies and other items a family might not have been able to gather in the rush to escape the fire. Children's kits include a stuffed toy. American Red Cross disaster assistance is free of charge, a gift made possible by generous donations and the work of volunteers.
