The American Red Cross of Colorado launches a new film series this week that aims to examine the complex humanitarian issues that arise in relation to armed conflict. The Red Cross International Services International Humanitarian Law (IHL) Film Series will debut with a showing of “Romeo and Juliet in Sarajevo” on Thursday, July 30, at the Colorado Red Cross regional headquarters in Denver.
“Since the beginning of cinematic history, filmmakers and documentarians have found inspiration in the communities and individuals affected by armed conflict. Films have an ability to tell the stories of those silenced by violence and oppression, and we thought a film series would be an excellent way to introduce the public to the very complex concepts of international humanitarian law,” said Tim Bothe, International Services Manager for the Red Cross of Colorado and Wyoming.
The first film in the IHL series is "Romeo and Juliet in Sarajevo." Originally aired in 1994, the documentary tells the story of Admira Ismić and Boško Brkić, lovers shot by a sniper while attempting to escape from Sarajevo in 1993. Ismić, a 25-year-old Muslim, and Brkić, a 24-year-old Serb, died in each other's arms on a bridge leading out of their besieged city.
Canadian director John Zaritsky received the Alfred Dupont Award from the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism as well as an Emmy nod for the film. The film explores the horrific daily realities faced by those who lived in Sarajevo during the siege, and, like its namesake Shakespearean play, reflects on the tragic impact of violent conflict on the individuals caught up within it.
Following the screening, attendees will participate in a facilitated discussion about themes and incidents in the film that relate to international humanitarian law.
