Woodland Park, CO – 7:05 a.m., Sunday, May 10, 2015 – The Red Cross opened a shelter at the Woodland Park High School in response to a request from Teller County Sheriff.

Woodland Park High School is located at 151 Panther Way in Woodland Park, CO. As of 7:00 a.m. there were no residents at the shelter but it remains open for people in need of a warm place to stay.

Widespread power outages in the area have put people, especially elderly, at risk due to the cold and lack of electricity. The shelter was opened to provide people with a place to go rather than stay at home with no electricity.

Often in cold weather when there is no electricity people turn to alternative heat sources. Red Cross urges everyone to be extremely careful when using those sources. Home fire safety information is available at
