*Due to severe weather events across New Mexico, volunteers and staff of the American Red Cross in New Mexico are responding to flooding issues in three New Mexico counties at this time. Below is a county by county breakdown:
Dona Ana County
Vado, NM - 5 people remain in the community center. Red Cross will be taking over this shelter later today if it continues to flood in the area. Additional rain in the area is expected. The shelter is at the Community Center.
Roswell, NM - 2 people remain in the Red Cross shelter in Roswell, this population is not expected to increase. Shelter is at the Eastern New Mexico University Roswell Campus Gym.
Artesia, NM - ~100 people are currently being evacuated from an RV Park that is completely surrounded by water. First responders are rescuing people by boat, triaging them at the fire department and then transporting them by bus (county provided) to the Red Cross shelter in Carlsbad, NM.
Carlsbad, NM - Red Cross has been requested to open a shelter at the Leyva Middle School in Carlsbad NM due to flooding evacuations of ~200 homes. Evacuations will begin within the hour. We have a team en route with a shelter trailer and additional material resources being sent from the Hobbs Red Cross Office.
* The Red Cross will continue monitoring conditions throughout New Mexico and working with Emergency Management officials as the rain continues across New Mexico.
*During flooding, the Red Cross reminds everyone not to cross flowing water on roadways to “Turn Around-Don’t Drown.” If thunder roars-go indoors. Helpful Red Cross smart phone apps can be downloaded from Google Play and the iStore. Look for first aid, tornado, wildfire and earthquake.
